Patients with a decreased level of consciousness due to a head injury should be clinically evaluated in order to decide whether they require advanced airway management.
If they do need to be intubated, this should be done via Rapid Sequence Intubation as intubation with sedation only is associated with a worse outcome.
If RSI is not available strongly consider transporting the patient in the lateral position with a high-flow oxygen mask in place to a facility that can perform RSI.
