The best thing to do is probably, find several pictures of Wombats and slightly study the anatomy. Not in detail just the general silhouette of a wombat, then with your visual aids on hand go to work sculpting. Start with a very general shape like the body and just a slightly shaped version of the head, then slowly, and patiently, add or take away for detailing until it greatly resembles a real wombat, then add the fine details to finish it off.

I have to make a model of a porcupine for my science project and what I'm planning to do is get some brown clay, mold the shape of a porcupine, then get toothpicks and stick them in the clay as the quills, and use black and white clay for details like eyes.
