It depends on whether the companies are in the same business, in which case there are certain industry 'indicators' that can tell you how well a company is performing.
Profit and cash flow is normally the best indicator of a companies performance.

Unless you mean how do you make a comparison as a consumer in which case the indicators are arbitrarily assigned by the consumer i suppose.
