A motte was made from soil dug when making the ditch or moat around the base of the motte. Soil alone would subside so layers of other materials like stone or rubble were used. This layer effect can clearly be seen in the Bayeux tapestry section 51. Some times a layer of clay was spread on the surface to reduce weathering and to make it slippery for attackers. A wooden palisade was erected around the moat and another around the top of the motte.
