A strong password is a must when you are accessing websites that have a lot of your personal information such as banking info or school loans. To create a strong password, do not use names or words that are easily identified with you, such as people you know, your dogs name, or the type of car you drive to name a few.
You will also want to incorporate a mixture of letters and numbers if the website will allow, and try to create passwords that are at least 6-8 characters in length. For example, the password "goat" would not be a very strong password. However, if you created the password "goat764ever" then it would be MUCH harder for a person or a computer program to crack.
There are many ways to make a safe password for the internet.
Using PasswordSafe's random password generator creates reliable passwords.
Googling "password generator" will produce several sites that can aid your search for a secure password- you may even tweak what they generate if you don't particularly trust the site.
A password method from Godaddy.com:
1. Start with a phrase you can easily remember. Example: "OttersAreBeautiful."
2. Replace one or more letters and add a special character like "Otter$AreBeautiful."
3. Next, replace some of the letters with similar numbers like "0tter$Are8eautiful."
4. Capitalize any one repeating letter like the letter e - "0ttEr$ArE8Eautiful."
The simple method I use is as follows:
1. Start with a semi-short phrase. EX: "Internet"
2. Reverse the keys with which you type; if the letter is "i", type "e" because your right hand normally types "i" and your left hand normally types "e"- you've switch hands. EX: "Evyiuviy"
3. Combine the original word with the backwards one. EX: "InternetEvyiuviy"
TIP: Combining 2+ words is a good idea, and having the number "1" as part of the original phrase will make your password contain both "1" and "-", thus increasing security.
And lastly, as a side note for whatever password you make, here is a list of important elements of a good password from PasswordSafe.com.

Well the obvious answer is not to publish an answer on the Internet.
The best is to generate your own password out of random numbers and characters, this means that is someone is trying to hack your account they would have to use a "brute force" approach, which entails generating trillions of number/ character combinations and trying each one successively. The other method hackers employ is dictionary based, they fire dictionary words and commonly used passwords at an account in the hope of getting lucky, this is a much faster method
The longer the password the more secure it is. For example if you use a password with only 2 numbers then there are 100 possible combinations, 3 numbers equals 1,000 and so on.
However, once you start adding a single alphabetical character you multiply the combinations by a factor of 26 each time or 52 if you include the fact that alphabet characters can be upper or lower case.
Example:
99 = 100
999 = 1,000
999Z = 52,000
999ZZ = 2,704,000
999ZZZ = 140,608,000
Most password systems allow the use of the "expanded character set", this means most ASCII coded characters (of which there are 256), and not simply upper and lowercase alphabet characters! This makes it possible to generate codes with a huge number of potential combinations. The more combination the longer it will take to hack your account.
I have found that the easiest way to generate a code (that I will remember) is to take a sentence or a phrase, preferably 10 words or more, take either the first or last letter of every word and use that as the basic code.
For example:
The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Hen = TQBFJOTLH (first letter) or EKNXDREYN (last letter)
Complicate it even more, convert every second (or third) letter to lower case:
TqBfJoTlH or EkNxDrEyN
Add a few numbers to complicate it (or in the case of ASCII code sets a few extra characters)
$$TqBfJoTlH$$999 or @EkNxDrEyN@4321
The basic thing is to remember your code phrase and the methodology that you used to encode the word.
