I found out: Carbonization of coconut shell is an industrial process, don't try this at home. All kinds of poisons are created burning the coconut shell in the wrong way. You don't want plain ash, it has to be carbonized, not burned, but then there's a danger you inhale CO gas. When the active coal is used for filtering you better be sure there is no poison residue, my guess is you can't.
