The Roman shields were of two shapes, oval and rectangular, the rectangular being the most popular. They were curved and made of plywood. Three layers of strips of wood were glued together, the middle layer being the length of the shield and the front and back layers being the width of the shield. The back of the shield was reinforced with wooden strips and it had a horizontal handgrip. Then both the back and front were covered with a thin layer of leather with reinforcing leather pieces at the corners. Added to this was a wide brass binding to protect the edges.
