I watched a show called Man vs. Wild. He went to the Sahara dessert and tried to find civilisation. Along the way he had to find shelter to sleep in that protects him from animals and the cold.
He found a cave that had formed over the years. First he threw in rocks to check if there were any animals inside. Then he got a big branch and tied his knife on the end to fight of any animals that tried to come in.
