There are literally 100 different things that can cause your four-wheel-drive not to work. The most common cause is a disconnected wire on the four-wheel-drive selector switch.
All wheel drive is all wheel drive, all the time. Four wheel drive is engaged or disengaged by the driver.

There is a vaccum motor assembly on the front axle that should have a hose attached to it... make sure the hose is secure and not leaking. The vaccum from this hose engages the four wheel drive to the front axle.
