I use the controls for the HDTV to make the picture bigger to fit the screen. I know when searching the web I can push one of the toggle buttons down and change the size of the website to fit the screen and have never tried it on a DVD because my Sony HDTV remote works and I don't have any use for the controller. The HDMI sync feature that came with the PS3 slim 120 GB and 250 GB models also allows the HDTV remote to work.
No some DVDs are restricted to certain regions and others might not be readable by the PS3. My PS3 has no trouble reading the DVDs I make of TV programs I record on my Media Center computer and it upgrades them to near HD quality. It also played the DVDs I rented better than my DVD/VCR.
