body armor is made out of layers of a specific type of kevlar aramid cloth layered between nylon. you cant cut it with scissors and it has to be sewn in layers too thick for a standard sewing machine - so you would have to spend more on equipment to make it that it would cost to buy it, plus, if you make it wrong, it wont work and you might die. improvised body armor would include thick books soaked in water, cardboard sheets soaked in cement, thick metal plates - goooood luck
Majorumbra: I have seen where small ceramic tiles used in bathrooms (comes like a fabric of tiles for quicker installation) layered with epoxy, "can" increase a BP Vest's survivability....The test I saw stopped a 9mm - 44 mag.
Crushed tin cans (squared...cubed in a large vise.) adds a layer to anything you can come up with. Stopped a 9mm. Was not tested against other ammo that I saw. (Some older BP armor was made from aluminum oxide.)
1/4 inch plate stainless steel is supposed to be good up to .44 mag. But I advise against it because of the weight. (Great for vehicle armor.)
One of the oldest "body armor" stories out there that I know of was a man who used bent plate steel to cover himself with. (A man in a can.) He was successful in robbing quite a few banks back then. (1800's) But was finally brought down by being shot in the legs until he fell. (See: "Ned Kelly" "Ned Kelly's Gang" Australia Circa 1845) I think the armor is still being displayed in a museum....
The "Homemade armor Bible" states "LAYERS! Of whatever you can find." (AND) "Tactics is your best armor." "When in doubt, find hard cover." Good advice!
I have not personally experimented with any of this, yet< just what I have seen and heard, and read. As the last answerer said, "Goooood luck!"
legal to own...... illegal to make or import without proper paperwork.
You don't really need free armour. Bronze armour costs about 150 coins, iron about 500 coins. Sure, you can mine ores, make the bars, and make your own armour - and that would technically be "free". But it is easier to earn money somewhere else, and just buy whatever armour you want.

It's not possible to "gold trim" your own armour, nor can another player do it..if they say they can it's a scam. however you can get gold trimmed armour from the Grand Exchange or from a treasure trail.
It is much easier to make adjustments to an outfit when you can actually see it on the person's (or mannequin"s) body. If you make your own, you can have it the perfect size for your own body shape.
