Before you can install Wordpress onto your Mac, there may be a few more manual installation steps you need to take. If Wordpress doesn't automatically download on your Mac take the following steps:
1. Go to "http://www.mamp.info/en/index" and click on the gray Elephant on the left that says "Download Now"
2. After MAMP downloads a screen will pop up. Click and drag the folder icon that has the gray MAMP Elephant on it into your applications folder.
3. Open the MAMP folder that is now located in Applications. Double click on the circular gray Elephant to launch MAMP.
4. If MAMP doesn't automatically take you to the MAMP start page in your internet browser, click on "Open Start Page" in the MAMP window that shows the status of servers.
5. On the MAMP start page that says, "Welcome to MAMP" click on the link "phpMyAdmin" under the MySQL heading.
6. Under MySQL localhost is a text box with the heading "Create new database." In this box type "wordpress" (without quotations) and click create.
7. Now, go to "http//wordpress.org/" and download wordpress. Once it finishes downloading it will be in the form of a folder in your download window.
8. Go to your applications folder.
9. Open your MAMP folder and open the folder entitled "htdocs."
10. Go back to your download window where the wordpress folder is. Right click and hit "show in finder." When the finder window opens displaying the wordpress folder, click and drag the wordpress folder (or copy and paste the entire folder) into the "htdocs" folder you opened in MAMP.
11. Now that the wordpress folder is located in the "htdocs," open the wordpress folder.
12. Locate the file titled wp-config-sample.php and open it.
13. In MySQL settings - You can get this info from your web host - DELETE 'database' and TYPE 'wordpress'
14. MySQL database username - DELETE 'username' and TYPE 'root'
15. MySQL database password - DELETE 'password' and TYPE 'root'
16. MySQL hostname - DELETE 'localhost' and TYPE 'localhost:8889'
17. AFTER MAKING THESE ENTRIES HIT SAVE!
18. Go to a new browser window in the Internet and type "http://
localhost:8888/wordpress/" in the address bar.
19. Follow the prompts to install wordpress and you're DONE!
You can't install manual templates on WordPress.org blogs, but you could certainly use a free host and install custom WordPress to manually put themes. Theme installation is easy, you just need to upload the zip file (Using Themes " WordPress Codex.)

Mac OS X has Java already installed. You do not need to download it and install it currently, and Java apps should have no problem running. It has to be a real java app, not a Windows exe file compiled that also uses java, that is still a Windows program. When Mac OS X 10.7 comes out, it will not have Java installed by default, and you have to install it manually just like you do on Windows.... just download the Mac version and install.
