Measure 16 inches from the outer edge of the end stud along the length of the bottom plate and mark the spot. Place the next stud so the mark lines up with the center of the stud and drive a pair of screws through the bottom plate up into the stud. Measure another 16 inches from the center of our new stud along the bottom plate and make a mark there. Screw in your next stud so its center lines up with the mark. "The Beginning Builder" Here's another perspective--you have to nail a top and bottom plate to the wall, right? This has to be done before you nail the bottom plate of the wall to the floor, right? Okay Begin by measuring 3/4" in from one end of two 2x4's lying face to face with the ends aligned. Make a mark, upside-down V with the point marking your measurement. Now, from the point of the V, measure very 16" down the boards (your tape measure already has it marked so if you hook the end of the studs, and mark 3/4" forward of every 16" you will be 16" on center. Separate the two studs, these are your top and bottom plate. Separate them, keeping the ends matched. Lay out your wall studs between them (should look like a ladder). Center each stud over the V you marked on the top and bottom plates and nail in place. Two nails each stud. If you are hand nailing, blunt the point of the nails to keep from splitting your studs. If you are gun nailing, just double tap each.

How do you measure bolt patterns?

Measure from center of one lug (stud that the lug nut bolts on to) to the center of the lug directly across from it if you have four-, six-, or eight-lug hubs. Measure using the metric side of the ruler, in millimeters. So if you have a four-lug hub and the measurement came out to 100mm, the bolt pattern is 4 X 100, which means that you have four lugs and that the separation is 100mm. Measure from the center of one lug to the center of the third stud (the one to either side of the center opposite) if you have a five-lug hub.

What does on center mean?

It means from the centre of one object to the centre of another. For instance, wall studs are usually 16 inches on centre. So, from the centre of one stud to the centre of the next stud it is 16 inches.

How do you measure wheel bolt pattern?

Hold a piece of paper over the wheel studs . Mark the center of each stud on the paper. Then draw a line from one stud across to furthest stud. Do this for each stud. You should have 5 lines all of which intersect in the center of the pattern. Then take a compass , put the point of the compass in the center of the pattern where the lines cross each other, then open the compass till the pencil touches the center of each stud. Draw a circle with the compass. Then measure across the circle with a ruler. That measurement will be the bolt pattern. On a Taurus, it will be metric. On most other Fords with a 5 bolt pattern, the measurement is in inches usually 4 and 3/4"

How do you measure lug patterns?

On a five bolt pattern measure from outer edge of one bolt then across to the middle of another skipping one bolt hole( not quite the diameter). On six or four bolt patterns measure across from bolt center to bolt center as you would the diameter if it were a circle.

What is the standard spacing of a stud wall?

Typically 16". You'll notice on a tape measure that 16" is highlighted. This is the distance from the side of one stud to the same side of the next stud (e.g. from the left side across the existing stud to the placement of the next one.) The actual void between studs is a little less (14 1/2). This is so sheetrock/plywood falls evenly on the wall.
