An altimeter in a plane is the same as a barometer on the ground. It measures atmospheric pressure. As you rise in elevation the pressure drops. The meter face has two hands like a clock, one revolution of the large pointer moves the small pointer to the first number. The large pointer reads in 20 feet intervals. One revolution of the large pointer equals 1000 feet. 10 revolutions of the large pointer equals 10000 feet. Looking at the position of the small pointer in thousands of feet and the position of the large pointer in graduations up to 1000 feet the pilot knows what his exact altitude is.There is a knurled knob on the altimeter that allows the pilot to adjust the pressure "hence the altitude" of the airport that he is at. Just before landing at an airport the pilot calls ahead to get the pressure setting of that airport, readjusts the altimeter to that airports pressure, so that he will be at the same pressure altitude as the control tower.
Contour lines are a way of representing height and structure on a flat map. In real life the landscape around you is full of features, rolling hills, sudden drops, gentle inclines, steep spurs and flat farmland. It is next to impossible to represent this directly onto a map.
Waves are measured by a recorder that tracks wave periods and frequencies. Measuring the trough and the crest of the wave is how get the actual height.
It is the vertical extent of an object. The method for measuring it depends on the scale: whether it is a mountain or a table, for example.
Altitude is measured with an altimeter

Measure human height by the transitive property. Stand up against the wall and make a mark at your height. Then measure the distance from the floor to the mark. You are as tall as the mark is above the floor.
with a tape measure.
The most suitable units to measure the height of a person are, feet and inches.

Height is shown on a map by boxes, each having a number in them, 1,2,3 and so on. they normally measure in miles, which is the easy way for starters.
Draw is to map, as measure is to room. A person can draw a map, just like a person can measure a room.
An elevation map would be better because an elevation map measures height.

A topographical map.
The map scale is a part of the map that is used to measure distance. The map scale can often be found in or around the map legend.

A topographic map shows the height of things.
Most people measure their height in feet and inches
A topographic map shows height above sea level using contour lines. These lines connect points of the same elevation, providing a visual representation of the terrain's vertical relief.
