The naming of organic compounds is based on a set of 'rules' known as systematic nomenclature, implemented by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). The system names compounds based on the type of bonding, which family and group they belong in, the composition of elements in the compound, among several other things.

For example, naming hydrocarbons is based on the number of carbon atoms present and the type of covalent bond. Propane denotes that there are three carbon atoms (-pro in systematic nomenclature means three), and it belongs to the alkane family with a single covalent bond (-ane shows that the compound belongs in the alkane family due to its single covalent bond).
