All new relationships are awkward because both people are trying very hard to impress each other & not completely being themselves. New couples try to be what the other person wants. Including pretending to like and/or dislike the same things, etc...
We all do it, but the best advise I can give you is to simply just be yourself. This will relieve alot of stress & eliminate the awkwardness. Remember, opposites attract!

1) Pretend you cannot see the person and wait for them to come to you, then look up as if you did not see them and gently give then a friendly hug.
2)walk up to them and say "hi"then just hug them natural.

- try not to think about it when your hugging them.
- if your shy just hug its no shame to hug a best friend.
- if they don't like hugs or being touched try a different question
