I have a 2004 Sierra as well and am experiencing the same problem. Only started happening when it got really hot outside. My leafsprings started squeaking as well. If you find a solution let me know. Good Luck.
A steering wheel might be squeaky because it might be the bushings that need to be replaced. Also the power steering fluid pump might be going bad. Both of these are easy fixes.

actually no its not it just means that your steering wheel squeks but you should think about oiling it.
