False ! Open Office Calc is quite happy to save files in .xls format !
Open in Excel and save as an Excel Template.
umm...you just answered your question. You disconnect it. That is like asking "how do you open a door?" ...you open it.
Excel 2007 creates xlsx files, and earlier versions of Excel create xls files. The earlier versions won't be able to open the 2007 files. So you need Excel 2007 to open them or get a converter or try and open them in Google docs. If you get them open, then save them in your version of Excel so that they can be opened in future, using the Save As option on the File menu.

.xlsx is the file format used in Microsoft Office Excel 2007. It is NOT backwards compatible (i.e. Excel 2003 and earlier versions cannot open it). The file is XML based and smaller in size than the .xls format. It is possible to open, edit, and save a .xls file in Excel 2007 for backward compatibility.
XLS is the filename extension for a Microsoft Excel Workbook.
