put a screwdriver in the latch pull the handle and apply pressure to the screw driver should pop the latch open
how can i repair a 94 chevy k1500 tailgate latch. cannot open gate
remove the panel from the gate (it may be difficult if the gate is still closed). there is a metal panel held w/ screws; remove that panel and the latch will be visible. pull both rods at the same time to unlatch the gate (careful, the space is small and the truck loves to pinch!).
use a flat head screwdriver to open the mechanism that is not workin put it in and push backward toward the tailgate
The tailgate on a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup can be removed by removing the gate from the hinges holding it in place. Open the tailgate halfway and remove the slotted hinge from each side while holding the gate up. Then open the tailgate all the way and slide the tailgate off.
The lift gate on a 2003 Dodge Durango can be opened from the inside if the latch is not working. There is a latch on the floor close to the door that can be tripped with the use of a screwdriver to open the gate. The cable for the gate might need to be repaired after this.
open tailgate and there will be two screws. upper and lower. upper by the tailgate latch.
To open the tailgate you have to use the key in the tailgate lock. If it is like mine, it does not always release immediately and you just need to push on the tailgate while the key is turned. You should be able to hear the latch release and then you just lift the tailgate up. If the shock absorbers for it are worn out it will be a slow hard lift to get it to open completely. l
make sure the tailgate is unlocked. while squeezing the release handle, push HARD on the bottom center of the tailgate, just above the bumper. then pull the gate out. this has never failed me and ive seen it about 50 times. once you get it open, replace the latch and the handle. they almost always need both.
remove the panel from the inside of the rear hatch door and check to make sure the latch mechenism is secure if not push or pull the leads to open hatch door then try to reconnect them
I once had a 1987 that had the same problem! On the inside of the tailgate, at the top ends, there should be a small lever. You can flip them one at a time and it will un latch the tailgate!
I was able to get my lift open by sticking a long, skinny, flathead screwdriver up between the latch and the body. Once it was in I slid the locking mechanism to the right. I got the gate open and was able to get the panel off and temporarily repair the latch.
You have to take off the plastic surround around the handle for the tail gate then pull the two silver rods toward each other or toward the handle and the gate will come down. Most likely the spring has broken or the lock stop and the kit to replace the whole latch assembly is about $35.00.
