The thermostat housing on the 1998 Mazda 626 6 cylinder is located underneath the air filter housing. You need to remove this air filter housing to get to the thermostat housing. There's two (2) bolts the left connecting the thermostat housing to the motor and another two (2) bolts facing the steering wheel connecting it to the engine. This is where the thermostat is housed.
The thermostat can be found inside of the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is located on the front of the engine.

Follow the upper rad hose from the radiator to the engine and you will find a housing thas has the thermostat. Take the housing off and when you reinstall the thermsotat, make sure the spring is toward the engine.
Remove the water supply hose from the thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. The thermostat will lift out. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.
