Typically you can switch on the fly between 2 WD, 4 HI and if you have it AWD. Doing this at 60 MPH or slower is highly advised. When switching into or out of 4 LO you will need to put the transmission in neutral and be at a complete stop. Park will not work. It has to be neutral and you can't be moving.
It is 4 wheel drive when the system is engaged. In 2 wheel drive the vehicle is driven by the rear wheels.
