Try cutting down while, at the same time, replacing sugar with artificial sweetener (only do this if you are finished growing, so around 25 only does this gets safe). No, it doesn't taste as good. That's why we like sugar .. we're hard-wired to like it. However, we won't die if we don't have it. It's a taste that can slowly be changed. Replace high-sugar snacks with fruit or things like low-fat cheese...anything that's not high in sucrose.
Eventually you should be off all sweetened soft drinks, all candy (except for an occasional treat) and most heavily-sugared desserts and confections. This sounds like an impossible task, but it can be done.
If you are using sugar to mood-alter, as many do, you might want to find a support group such as Overeaters Anonymous or one of the online support groups. We also suggest that you be tested for blood sugar abnormalities, as a craving for sugar is often a warning of developing Diabetes.
Food Addiction is very powerful, first off check with your Dr. to discuss your health issues and second of all get off the couch and get busy. I find that when I'm busy I don't eat near as much food. I think the key is it to start with small changes for yourself. I use to be addicted to Mt. Dew, I made a promise to myself to start small and start drinking diet Mt. Dew. I lost so much weight over a years time it was amazing. Now a real Mt. Dew taste terrible to me. Next was white breads... make a change to 35 calorie wheat bread. Just small changes makes a big difference. You also need to know that when you eat good food with fiber and healthy foods they fill you up more, when you eat starches and sugar your brain craves more and more. I've lost over 30 lbs this year, I was just so tired of being overweight. I feel so much better now. A good support group is great to like Weight Watchers. I tried ever diet out there and I finally ordered The Biggest Loser books and they inspired me to get in gear. I never ever told anyone but my husband I was dieting and before you know it, the weight was gone. You have to want it... it's 90% mental. If you don't like to exercise, park far away from say Walmart, and use the steps instead of elevators. Small changes! You don't' gain weight over night and you can't lose it over night. It's took me one year to lose 30 lbs but I've kept it off. Good Luck!

Even though treatment may be the best option, they are other ways to fight an addiction. Associate your addiction with something ugly or painful. Wear a rubber band about your wrist and every time you think about your addiction, snap the rubber band, or have someone else do it for you. You can also just get rid of anything that fuels your addiction. Keep it out of your home and don't associate with other people that have the same addiction or go places where your addiction is common. It may not be fun, but it will help you in the long run. I hope this helps and you beat whatever addiction you are dealing with. Good luck!
