You should not have to partition an external hard drive, especially with that much space. if you must partition the drive, you can download a partition manager like PartitionGuru online, and most of these programs are for free. They can partition hard drive, external hard drive and USB flash drive. But you have to read tutorials first before partitioning anything. If you have important files on the drive, you should backup files first.

MiniTool Partition Wizard is the one that I use for quick and easy partitioning of drives and resizing of partitions. You can find it at http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html. This is a free utility.

Another option (if you have another computer) is to attach the hard drive to this other computer and use the WIndows Computer Management control panel applet to partition the drive. This works just as well and is included in each version of Windows.

If you have any further questions about these tools or about the procedure needed to accomplish your goal, feel free to drop me a line and let me know.

This table tells BIOS how many partitions the drive has and how each partitions is divided into one or more logical drives, which partition contains the drive to be used for booting (called the active partition), and where each logical drive begins and ends.1-map to the partitions on on the hard drive2-information about where each logical drive is located, where it starts and where it ends3-which partition contains the drive to be used for booting (the active partition)The first is a map to the partitions on the harddrive, and how they are divided, the second, which partition contains the drive to be used for booting this is called the "Active Partition", and third where each logical begin and ends.

How many partitions can there be on a hard drive?

As many as it can handle (how big it is). And adding partitions does not make more space. It's like putting a brick wall in the middle of a football field. :-P This is depend on your disk style, if your disk is MBR, you could only create four primary partitions or three primary partitions with one Extended partition (you could create many logical partition under extended partition) at most If your disk style is GPT, you could create as many as you can. here is an article about how to make partition from http://www.partition-magic-windows7.com/res/create-partition-windows7.html

What are three reason for creating two partitions separat?

If you have a big hard drive to increase performance it's better to split the drive in smaller ones (partitions). Also, even so the partitions are located on the same different drive logically they are located in different places. So if one partition (not a physical drive) fails another one would still work.

What are the restrictions on MBR scheme?

The Master Boot Record (MBR) scheme has a limit of 2TB for the maximum partition size. Additionally, MBR only supports up to four primary partitions or three primary partitions and one extended partition with multiple logical partitions within it. Modern systems often opt for the newer GUID Partition Table (GPT) scheme, which does not have these limitations.

What is the difference between a primary partition and an extended partition?

Primary partition is like main entrance of your house. When the operating system boots (starts up) it has to access your primary drive and RAM to load operating system. Extended partitions are the fractions separated from primary drive for data storage purposes.

How many partitions do you need to install Windows and Linux?

Technically, only two or three. In some distributions its even possible to install all in one partition, but I don't recommend this. These days it's hard on BIOS computers to get all the partitions you want, since between Windows and your OEM you'll have three out of four of your partitions used, you'll need to set up an extended partition. Unless you're on UEFI! In which case you're golden.

What is hard drive partition?

Disk partition it involves the dividing of the hard disks into portions as opposed to the using of the hard disk without dividing it. Disk partition is very important since it allows the maximum usage of the disk and it encourages organisation of the disk; it is also easier to change programs without affecting other programs.
