English proper does not roll the letter "r".
Learn to parse verbs (past, present, future, etc).
Learn the difference between a "direct object" and an "indirect object".
Learn to recite the 30 most used prepositions (in alphabetical order).
Learn how to identify a prepositional phrase.
Learn how to identify a clause (contains a noun), and a sub-clause (also contains a noun).
If you can learn how to diagram sentences, you will know everything above. And, you will be better with English than most Brits or Americans who grew up speaking English. Finally, learn how to use the "comma" and "period".

The best way to pass an English course (or any course) is to know the scope of the subject matter for that particular class and concentrate on that subject matter. Pay attention to the expectations of the teacher/professor of the course and focus on what is expected. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you're not sure, even if the teacher is not respectful of your questions. If you can focus on these two elements from the start of a course, you should be able to do well in that class.
