The best way is to let the hamster walk onto your hand. However, if you can't do this, say your in a rush, gently pick the hamster up around the middle. Try to hold them like this for the shortest amount of time possible.

Trust me I am a hamster owner... I was freaked out the first days I was scared it would nip at me. Luckily by time you get use to your hamster. First wash your hands so there is no food sent and etc so the hamster wont mistake it by food and nip at it. Take your pointer finger and genteelly say your hamsters name and don't yell your hamsters name just calmly make your hamster feel comterabel while you continue the process put your pointer finger on its back genteelly and if it runs away then it was startled don't freak out if it gets startled then it will get really scared. If it JUST wont let you touch it... well start by gaining its trust.. feed it fresh food with your hand and hold it near its nose so it can sent it and feel your sent and get use to you. Continue by talking to him by saying his or her name and then try again. If the hamster lets you touch it then start with two fingers keep your finger on its back for 1-2 seconds so it can get your feeling then keep going till your whole hand. Try this many times. Later scoop your hamster from the back with one hand. Even if it does nip ( which it wont) TRUST me it will not hurt. It happened to me.. there's nothing to be afraid of. Just genteelly scoop and cup your other hand on the top!

Here you go you learned how to trust and hold your hamster.

Good luck.

Because she is young she will not have much trust in you and she will be easily scared. But you can build up the trust between you by giving her treats (but not too many!) and she will start to like you. When you try to pick her up, don't move really quickly because you will scare her but try to move slowly so she knows your there and might accept it. Another tip is that you should not try to introduce new people to her but make her get used to you being there and your smell. I know this sounds strange but my hamster really likes mealworms and he was afraid of me before hand but now he likes me more than ever. Good luck with your hamster. Remember, building up trust with pets takes TIME!

cheekolol, Good Luck : )

What if your hamster runs away when you try to pick him up?

If your hamster runs away when you try to pick it up, it either feels threatened, intimidated, or scared. Try taking it slowly, by constantly talking to it so it can feel comfortable near your voice, and feeding it a few treats every day. It is normal for hamsters to flee when you try to hold it, so be patient and let it get used to you.

I got A hamster yesterday should I try to pick him up yet?

yea, at first when i had my hamster i was soo scared to hold her but then my friend tried it for me. It was soo cool. When a hamster goes into a new home you have to get her used to the enviroment. So you should definetely hold him =] hamsters are playful (sometimes) so love them and dont be afriad of them.
