You collect some ash from a burnt out fire and put the ash somewhere on the ground. then collect any kind of plant, and plant it in the ash. If you actually would like a crop, then you can get them from the second island.
Note: Once you have been given farming plans on the second island, you can find the plans under miscellaneous - fertilized soil. Place one of these on the ground anywhere and then you can go up to it and plant a sprout.
