Okay. This will take a while.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl, or SSBB, is played using various controllers, either the Wii remote held on its side, a Classic Controller plugged into the Wii, or a GameCube controller plugged into the Wii. I will detail the controls on the GameCube, as that is without a doubt the best controller for the game: it's similar to the controls for Melee, nay, identical, and offers the greatest amount of control.

The menu is accessed from the start screen using the start button. Pretty basic. Scrolling through the various options is accomplished with the control pad or joystick; the joystick is probably easier.

The options in the menu are: multiplayer (brawl), single player, options, vault, and WiFi. The WiFi option connects you to online brawls around the world, if you have WiFi. If not, it just doesn't work. The options menu lets you test play different soundtracks, sound effects, play with the display settings, etc. The vault option lets you access the . . . um, vault. Inside are the coin launcher, which lets you launch coins you've collected at trophies and stickers to collect them, the trophy hoard, which offers you various ways of viewing your collection, the sticker collection, which is essentially the same as the trophy hoard with stickers, and the challenges you have completed or have yet to complete. These can sometimes be broken with one of three hammers to bypass the challenge and collect on the reward.

Okay. Here's where it gets tricky. The multiplayer option contains brawl, tourney (a shrunken version of the tournament from Melee), and special brawls. A normal brawl can contain up to four characters, any one of which can be PC or human, depending on how many controllers are available. Browse the characters with the joystick and press A to select one. When all characters are selected, press start to advance to the stage selection screen. Pick a stage the same way you picked a character. Then, fight. There are timed free-for-alls, timed coin battles, and untimed survival fights. Additionally, there can be team battles of 2 on 2, 2 on 1, or 3 on 1. Use the A button in conjunction with the joystick to use standard attacks, the B button in conjunction with the joystick to use special attacks, the X and Y buttons to jump, the R and L buttons to shield (or Dodge when used with the joystick) and the Z button to grab. Press the Z button again to hit the grabbed foe, and a direction on the joystick to throw them. Whatever you do, don't fall of the stage in any direction: that's how you die/lose points/LOSE. These controls hold for all characters in all aspects of the game.

This is the fundamental part. The rest can be figured out on your own. However . . .

The tourney mode is a tournament that can hold up to 24 people, allowing more than 4 people to participate.

The special battles can be customized with various interchangeable features, like spicy curry battles, where all movement is instantly a run with flames shooting out of characters' mouths, bunny hood battles, where all characters can run super fast and jump super high, or bunny curry battles, where everyone is always running really fast with flames shooting from their mouths.

Single player mode contains practice, which allows you to . . . er . . . practice . . . till eternity with any character, the Classic mode, which allows a single player to fight through various levels consisting of brawls with other characters culminating in a final boss battle, Adventure mode, which allows for the same thing in an epic sidescrolling adventure with its own distinct plot, target practice, which allows characters to try to take out all the targets in different difficulty levels while being timed, and home-run contest, which allows characters to beat up on a sandbag for five seconds before hitting it sky-high with the home-run bat to see how far it can go.

One final note: there are various items in SSBB that can be turned on and off. These items will serve as projectile weapons, blasters, healing items, invincibility items, etc. Among them is the all-important Smash Ball. Breaking one allows a player to access his or her character's Final Smash by using the B button, an all-powerful move that can be used as the trump card in brawls. For the rest, you're on your own.
