In VS. or Battle mode, set Team to ON in the rules screen. In single player it will be 4 vs. 4; in multiplayer you can pick your team with the L and R buttons.
WARNING: You can still hit your teammates with items so be careful. If you play VS. on Easy or Normal level and you're in first, expect to be team-attacked a lot.
