You should not attempt to polish a Breyer model horse. The paint used is fairly durable, but cannot withstand most solvents. A Glossy model horse is glossed at the factory. Matte finish horses have no top gloss coat. A dirty model should be gently washed in warm soapy water, using a mild dish detergent. Black marks may not be able to be removed without damaging the underlying paint.
Adding any kind of additional gloss to a model can actually detract from the value, so consult a model horse collector or one who restores models before actually attempting to alter a model in the clean-up process.

Yes, heat can cause "bloating" in plastic model horses. As the horse heats up, so does the air inside, causing it to expand. The small hole sometimes found near the mouth is an attempt to avoid bloating by allowing the air to escape in the case of expansion.
A model riding horse is usually a temperamental family type of horse. A paint, pinto, palomino etc is usually good but you should always learn about a horses personality before riding it.
