The first step to planning a three-day hike is to decide what trail you would like to hike. After you have decided, check the area where you will be hiking to see if you need a permit or need to pay for use of any campsites you will be using. Plan out how many miles you will hike each day and make sure there is enough water either where you are staying or bring water with you. When you plan, remember to end each day at a campsite if the area in which you are hiking requires you to camp in a pre-existing campsite.

Since you are going on a three-day hike, you are going to need three days worth of food. Make sure to bring lightweight food so your food doesn't weigh you down. If you have a backpacking stove, then you can just buy a few dehydrated backpacking meals and have those for dinner. Three good backpacking meals that you can make without a backpacking stove are: tuna and crackers, peanut butter and jelly, and dry oatmeal.

Things you need to have in your backpack are: Boots or good tennis shoes, thick socks (smart wool are awesome), sock liners, rain gear, water, sunscreen if you burn easily, compass, comfortable clothing, hat, flashlight, bug spray, tent, dining gear, enough food, and first aid kit. And remember to tell at least two other people where you are going and how long you will be there in case there are any problems.
