Liver damage can occur when there are substances in the body that are especially toxic to the liver. Examples of some of these toxins include alcohol, drugs (like acetaminophen, narcotics, statins, or NSAIDs), and can also be from viruses and bacteria. Hepatitis (meaning liver inflamation) is a disease that can cause extensive liver damage and can be transmitted sexually, from sharing needles, or in certain cases, just having prolonged contact with someone with it.

To help prevent liver damage, limit the consumption of alcohol, NEVER share needles with ANYONE, do not exchange bodily fluids with anyone that has hepatitis, practice safe sex, do not overdose on medications that are known to have effects on the liver, and if you are exposed to anyone with hepatitis A or B, it is a good idea to get a vaccination.
