i have a 1990 Cadillac Seville and my trunk has hydraulics on it. I just have to shut it until its almost closed and then it does the rest on its own. but you shouldn't have to slam it down or anything If it does not pull down you need to replace the pull down switch.

If you look in your trunk on the right side and pull the panel back there is a tuner there where all the wiring is
pull up as hard as you can in a jerking motion. just be sure you dont smash your self in the face <did that>

Insert a 1/2 inch pull handle into tensioner and pull toward front of car to release tension. Remove and replace belt. Be sure to route belt correctly.
If you don't have an own error code reader. You can use a free service at Auto Zone. They can pull trouble codes out for you for free.
push the off and warm buttons together on the climate control panel. Hold and release . Read codes

That sound like a loose connection..pull the switch to the ON position play with the wiring . look at the dimmer switch.. check your ground wire. GOOD LUCK..NOW..LOL..tell me where the FUEL PUMP RELAY is on a 1979 Cadillac Seville( not under the hood)
move seat all the way fwd there will be two 16mm or 18mm bolts holding the track down easy to get to from the back seat, remove lift up and pull back
