if you are talking about a conversion (using what you already have): I'm not sure your application or why you would need to do this but, the only difference in a 4.8 and 5.3 vortecs is the rotating assembly. a 5.3 is just a 4.8 with 9mm extra stroke. bore is the same. block is the same. even heads and intake. the ECU is flashed diferently but other than that, the motors are identical. if you're a competant engine builder, you can buy 4.8 crank and rods and install them and have a GM dealer reflash your engine computer. if you don't have confidence in your mechanics skills, i would bring a handy friend in or just leave it to the professionals.
if you are talking about an engine swap: once again, you're dealing with an identical engine. it will bolt right into the same spot and from the outside it will appear no different except if you decide to maintain the plastic vortec 4800intake plenum cover. once again if you don't know exactly what you're doing, please consult several levelheaded individuals who do. this should only take a master craftsman half a weekend and i find most mechanics (i.e. my friends) will work for beer and barbeque. good luck
