With the car on jack stands, you have to remove the plug in the middle of the diff. Sometimes it is a bit hard, but it will come out. First check the level, with the plug out, oil should just drip out a little. If you need to add, use a small hand pump with the correct oil, say 80 or 90. If the plug does not want to come out, then heat has to be applied to get it going. A local garage can do this.

I assume that is the button that allows you to turn off or turn on the overdrive for the transmission ( my Ford Explorer also has a button on the end of the gear shift lever for that purpose )

On a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria : If you have the overdrive switched off using the transmission control switch on the end of your gear selector lever ( P R N etcetera ) You will see the " O/D OFF " light above and to the right of your speedometer and if you have the digital dash it will show " overdrive off " to the right of the speed indicator
