This is a fairly major job. I highly recommend that you pick up a
Haynes or Chilton manual to guide you through the procedure.
It must have a TIMING CHAIN because Gates ( they make timing belts etc . ) does not list a timing belt for the 2.2 liter or 2.4 liter engines in a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire
To fix the Pontiac Sunfire if it jumped time, the timing belt has to be replaced. Then the car has to have the timing set again after the belt is replaced.
No, it has a cam chain.
In a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire : Both the 2.2 and the 2.3 litre four cylinder engines have a timing CHAIN
timing chain
All 2002 Sunfires, 2.2 and 2.4, had timing chains
I just found out that it has a timing chain because mine is being replaced.
I am trying to change the belt on a 2.2 L, 96 Pontiac Sunfire. There is no adjustment on the alt. or power steering that I can see and I cant see how the tensioners work. Anyone have any ideas.
The 2004 Pontiac Sunfire is equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt. Timing chains are generally more durable and require less frequent replacement compared to timing belts. Regular maintenance is still important to ensure the longevity of the engine components associated with the timing chain.
It has a Timing Belt.
According to my Haynes shop manual, it is a chain. FriPilot
It does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain that requires no maintenance.
