If your referring to the classic mini they put the battery in the boot to save space in the engine bay. In the case of the new BMW MINI it could be one of two reasons. BMW put batteries in the boots of most of their cars (with terminals for jump starts in the engine bay) however BMW may have just copied the original 1958 design to save space around the engine. I guess a mini wouldn't be a mini without the battery in the boot!
