Well, if you are, I am in the same situation as you. I have spent the last 5 years at school with my hair always in a ponytail or a braid. What I suggest is: go to a small party or just hangout and put your hair down. A few people will see it that way and I suggest you start with your friends. Then gradually let more and more people see it, and then just start putting it down at work or school. As many people will have already seen it down then not many people will make a big fuss.
