Depends on what operating system you are using.
In Windows, Alt+F4 will close a window right away. Ctrl+Q will sometimes quit an application, which is better than closing the window itself. Ctrl+W will often close a sub-window in a multiple-document interface, or things like a single tab in Firefox.

A user can use the "X" icon on the upper-right corner of the application window, press Alt+F4 in most applications, press Alt, Space, C to close the application via the system menu, or right-click on the program's icon in the taskbar and choose Close.
The window will be instantly closed and disappear off your monitor screen!
You can close the current application on your computer by pressing <Alt>F4. This is probably a joke, but to less knowledgeable PC users, the combination of Alt + the F4 key is a shortcut to close the application. (Macs don't have a series of F-keys, or Function keys, and it does not apply there). Usually can be seen on various internet forums as a response to pretty much any question, as the person will unintentionally close whatever they were working on.
Alt is used to alter the functions. such as, alt+F4 can close the current window, ctrl+alt+del closes the current desktop.
