There is no need to "raise" the strut. With the strut bottomed, the lower control arm can be pushed down far enough to get the ball joint stud under the steering knuckle and guide the ball joint stud into the bore. Take care not to damage the CV joint rubber boot as the ball joint stud will be very close to it. Also you can detach the lower control arm from the frame by removing the bushing bolt which will make it easier to install the the ball joint stud and less likely to damage the boot. When the need arises for ball joint replacement on these vehicles, I usually replace the entire lower control arm assembly. They aren't that expensive and the ball joint is already installed in the control arm along with a new rubber bushing on the other end. The rubber bushing is usually also worn out by the time the ball joint is worn out. I usually replace both left and right lower control arms at the same time since they both wear at the same rate. Check wheel alignment afterwards. Most of the time realignment isn't required but it needs to be checked. The real payoff is a noticeable improvement in ride quality and steering control. Good luck, Jay

How do you replace control arm bushings on a pt cruiser?

To replace the control arm on a PT Cruiser you must first raise the vehicle, and then remove the front tire and wheel assembly. The stabilizer bar links from the Cruiser and rotate the forward ends of the stabilizer downward. Remove the nut and pinch bolt to ease resistance, follow up by removing the ball joint stud to the steering knuckle. The ball joint stud should be separated from the steering knuckle by prying down the lower control and up against the ball joint on the steering knuckle. Remove in this order: the front pivot bolt attaching the lower control arm; the rear pivot bolt attaching the lower control arm to the front suspension cross-member and frame rail; remove the lower control arm from the cross-member. Replace the bushings, and then reassemble the unit.

How do you replace front control arm bushing in 2002 Bonneville?

The control arm bushings are pressed into the control arm. You must use a press (ball joint press with proper adapters, etc.) to remove and install bushings. You may need to heat old bushings with torch to remove bushings from control arm. If you are comfortable with this then here is what you need to do: Remove wheel. Use safety glasses while removing ball joint stud from steering knuckle. Unbolt control arm from vehicle. Change bushings. Install control arm in reverse order. You should get an alignment after doing any front end work.

How do you replace the front ABS sensors on a 1992 Sedan DeVille?

The ABS sensor is part of the hub wheel bearing assembly. The hub wheel bearing will have to be replaced. This involves removing the wheel, the hub axel nut and then three torx screws which attach the hub wheel bearing assembly to the steering knuckle. A puller tool will be neede to separate the hub bearing from the steering knuckle. If the hub bearing is heavily rusted to the steering knuckle you may need to heat the metal in order to loosen the rust connection.

How do you replace a lower ball joint on a 98 ford ranger?

Mountaineer, 1995-99 Explorer and 1998-99 Ranger The ball joints on the Mountaineer, 1995-99 Explorer and 1998-99 Ranger are integral with the control arms. If the ball joint is defective, the entire control arm must be replaced. ( not always, Ball joint can be removed by taking off the spring clip on top, and then using penetrating oil and heat to drive the Lower Ball joint out. First remove steering knuckle as described below. And make sure not to get too close to the cv boot with the heat, I just did 2 on a 98 ranger, first drove out without heat, 2nd had to be heated and then driven out ) To remove the lower control arm, the torsion bar must be removed. Anytime the torsion bar is disturbed, the ride height must be checked and adjusted. 1.Position the steering wheel to the on-center position. Loosen the wheel lug nuts. 2.Raise and safely support the vehicle. 3.Remove the wheel lug nuts and wheel. 4.Disconnect the stabilizer bar link bolt from the lower control arm. 5.Remove the front shock absorber. 6.Remove the torsion bar. 7.Remove the lower ball joint retaining nut cotter pin and loosen the nut but do not remove it. 8.Disconnect the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle using a jawed puller, such as Pitman Arm Puller T64P-3590-F, or equivalent. WARNING Fasten a support, either out of a block of wood or wire wrapped around the frame, and support the weight of the steering knuckle/brake assembly. Do not allow the steering knuckle/brake assembly to hang from the upper ball joint as this may damage the joint. 9.Position a jack under the lower control arm then remove the lower ball joint retaining nut. 10.Raise the lower control arm until the lower ball joint stud is free from the steering knuckle. 11.Remove the two nuts and bolts retaining the lower arm pivot points to the frame crossmember. 12.Remove the lower control arm from the frame pockets. Some careful prying may ease the removal of the arm. To install: 13.Inspect the lower ball joint, boot and pivot bushings. If any inspected components are worn or damaged, the entire control arm must be replaced. Do not tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts to the final torque until the end of the installation procedure. 14.Position the lower control arm pivot points into the frame and crossmember pockets. Install the bolts and nuts and snug the bolts. 15.Position a jack under the lower control arm. 16.Install the torsion bar. 17.Raise the lower control arm to allow the lower ball joint stud to be inserted into the steering knuckle. 18.Lower the control arm assembly and ensure that the lower ball joint stud protrudes through the steering knuckle bore. 19.Install the lower ball joint attaching nut and tighten to 83-113 ft. lbs. (113-153 Nm). Install a new cotter pin, advancing (tightening) the nut as required. Never loosen the retaining nut in order to install the cotter pin. 20.Install the shock absorber. 21.Install the wheel and snug the lug nuts. 22.Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm). The lower control arm-to-frame bolts must be tightened with the weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels. If clearance permits, allow the vehicle to sit on the ground while tightening the bolts. 23.If necessary, raise the vehicle again and position either car ramps under the wheels or jackstands on the lower control arms, as close to the wheels as possible. 24.Tighten the control arm-to-frame bolts to 111-148 ft. lbs. (150-200 Nm). 25.Lower the vehicle. 26.Check and adjust the ride height. 27.While it should not be necessary, have the wheel alignment checked by a professional shop. credit and thanks to: justanswer.com

Can anyone give detailed instructions on replaceing lower ball joints on a 1994 dodge Dakota 4x4?

To replace the lower ball-joint first remove the drive axle of the side to be worked on by removing the hub cotter pin, nut lock, and spring washer. Then loosen the hub nut 1/4 turn. Now raise the vehicle and support it securely on stands or blocks. Remove the skid plate, then the hub nut and washer. Remove the driveaxle flange bolts and separate the driveaxle from the differential flange. Tap the end of the driveaxle out of the hub with a plastic or rubber mallet (if it is stuck, a 2-jaw puller can be used). Carefully remove the driveaxle from the vehicle. Reinstallation after the ball-joint is replaced is the reverse order. Torque the flange bolts to75 ft-lbs and the hub nut to 190 ft-lbs. Using a ball-joint separator (looks like beefed-up c-clamp)(available at most parts stores for sale and sometimes available for rent), press out the old ball-joint. --- Alternatively, if this tool is not available, the lower control arm can be removed and taken to a repair shop where the ball-joint can be removed and the new one pressed in (as well as new control arm bushings if required).--- Inspect the tapered holes on the steering knuckle for damage or deformation. If any is found, the knuckle must be replaced. Clean any dirt in or around the tapered hole. The new ball-joint is pressed in with the same tool used to remove it. Install the new ball-joint boot and retainer with a large socket and a hammer. Reconnect the ball-joint to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 80 ft-lbs. Install the cotter pin (tighten, never loosen, the nut just enough to insert the pin if necessary). Don't forget to install the grease fitting and grease the joint unless a permanently sealed/lubricated joint was used.

How do you replace front wheel bearings on a 1995 ford escort?

Their are two ways, first of all you need to remove the whole steering knuckle from the vehicle. First remove the brake caliper, and brake rotor. Then remove the axle from the knuckle, the two top bolts from the strut, lower control arm, and the outer tie rod. Then at this point you can just replace the whole knuckle. Or, the bearing sits in the knuckle behind the part where the rim would normally bolt to. It is a pressed in bearing, so in order to remove it you would need a press, hydraulic or manual. Face the knuckle downward, and with the proper press tool press the bearing out from the top until the spindle drops out, then press the bearing off the spindle. You can now reverse the process to install the new bearing.
