First you buy, borrow, or xxxxx the manual and look-up how to read the codes. Usually it involves using a paperclip or jumper wire to jump 2 terminals on the DLC (data link connector) and turning the key to the on position(not starting it) and then counting the flashes of the check engine light.
This also depends on what OBD connector is under the dash.....some use the 5 and 6 pin (doesnt work but according to haynes is a way to get codes from the OBD2 style found in 1995) some the A-B (OBD1 style) work and work well.
Check compatability with both year and modelof vehicle.
Follow this link. It explains how to pull the codes without a code reader. http://nissanhelp.com/diy/common/nissan_engine_codes_read_2.php
Any OBD II code reader will do the trick.
Without a code reader (you can buy one for about $80 at most auto parts stores), you can sometimes erase the codes by disconnecting the battery cables. Most newer code readers allow you to erase the computer memory.
It cannot be done, you must have a code reader because the system is OBD2, you used to be able to do it without a code reader, but that was OBD1, OBD2 is much more complicated electronics. If you want to get it scanned, you should go to Autozone, they will code scan for free but will not clear codes. You have to pay someone with a code reader to clear the codes, disconnecting the battery doesn't work either
No difference in the engines, just in the ECU (Engine Control Unit) programming. OBD2 doesn't let you have the diagnostic codes without a code reader.
I'm certainly NOT a mechanic but .... since the trouble codes are stored in the vehicle's on-board computer I doubt that there IS any way to retrieve them without a device and a program that can "read" the car's computer.
I am sorry but you don't and you will need one to clear codes after the repair.
To read a check engine code a person will need a code reader. They can also take their vehicle to an Auto Zone store and have them read the codes and explain what they mean for free.
take it to Auto Zone they have a code reader which will erase the code for the check engine light they do it freeAnswertake it to Auto Zone they have a code reader which will erase the code for the check engine light they do it free They won't clear it for you not allowed but you can get the code reader from them as rent a tool clear the code yourself and bring back and get money back from rent a toolAs an employee of Autozone, we are not permitted to erase codes. this is company policy. If any employee is erasing codes they are subject to termination if caught.
I don't think that there is a way, but I could be mistaken. However, most auto stores like Auto Zone, Checker, Kragen, etc. will read the codes for you at no charge. FriPilot
You need a programmer or a code reader. You can purchase a product like Bullydog or Hypertech which will allow you to change certain factory settings and clear the codes or you may purchase a code reader. Once you have the codes go online and type them into the search engine and you can find what they indicate.
Any mechanic with a code reader can get them from the car then you can look them up online.
