I don't think that there is a way, but I could be mistaken. However, most auto stores like Auto Zone, Checker, Kragen, etc. will read the codes for you at no charge. FriPilot

If it's an OBD2 car, then no...you have to have a code reader. The good news is that many auto parts stores will read the codes for you for free. Just be careful listening to their diagnosis.
