On the right side of car in the engine compartment. Just behind the battery and next to the fuse covers, is a diagnostic connector. You jumper the te1 and t1 connections and then turn the key to the on position. The light will flash a series of times and you count the flashes in sets of 2. These are your codes. Some jumpers are different and the books can say something else also. I just know this is what it says on the sticker inside my diagnostic connector.

From '96 up the Tauri (and all cars) had OBD2 systems, which (I believe) can not be read without a scanner. Many chain auto parts stores will check codes on these cars for free.
Jumping the pin connector on the ECU will allow the check engine light to flash on the dash console. The check engine light will flash repeatedly and show codes.

Most vehicles after 1995 incorporate the OBDII system and you have to use a scanner to retreive the codes. However, there are auto parts stores such as Auto Zone that will scan it for you ay no charge.
There are hundreds of different codes that can cause the check engine light to come on. It needs to have a code reader hooked up to find out the specific code. Most auto parts stores will do this for free.
