The proper way to check oil on all automobile engines equiped with a dip stick:
Best Proceedure:
1st when you park for the knight park on level ground.
DO NOT Start The Engine!
Do NOT Remove The Dip stick and wipe it!
2nd When you pull out the dip stick Check the oil level, Because the oil is cool and the dip stick tube has no oil smeared up it the level is easy to see.
If you need to do hot checks at the pump on a long trip:
Remove the stick and wipe it with a clean cloth or paper towel.
Dip it back in the tube and remove.
Check both sides and see if the level is the same. if not the lower level is correct.
If the stick has hash marks it will hold the oil more acurately and easier to see.
If the stick has holes, make sure the holes are dry when you wipe so when you dip you look through to see what ones have been under the oil level.
If you do not get a good test the first time, put the stick in and go for coffee, the tube needs to drain so you get a good test.
If it is an automatic, read the dipstick. It is written on the dipstick. If it is a standard tranmission, mercon works.
It is important to check and maintain the fluids of a car. The transmission fluid of a 1998 Chevy Venture can be checked by warming the car, removing the transmission dipstick from under the hood, wiping it off, dipping it back in and removing it to see the level.
