It really depends on what you're using to record with. If you're using a stand alone DV recorder, there may be a way to select the recording speed. You'll have to refer to the operating manual for the info on your particular machine. It may or may not be able to do it.

If you're transferring to DVD using your computer, it'll depend on the software you're using and its capabilities.

How many hours can be recorded on a DVD plus R disc?

Your question begs the question, "Hours of what?" The disc can hold 4.7 GB of data. What the data is, and its Format will determine the number of playback hours that it represents. It is possible to record one movie on the disc and have it be full, or record multiple movies on the same capacity disc. This is because the software creating the disc can use compression when writing. Likewise, you could write only audio files in MP3 format to the disc and have many hours and hours of content. In the highest quality format, a DVD will hold only one hour of video/audio content. At a lower quality, equivalent to a VHS tape, the same DVD can hold about 9 hours of video/audio content. So, the answer to your question is, between 1 and 9 hours of video/audio content, in a decent quality.

Many options. 1. Hook up a DVD recorder to your camcorder or tape deck. Play the tape, and record the DVD. 2. Use video software to import your tape, and then record that file to a DVD, using iMovie or something similar. 3. Hire someone to do the video conversion for you. I find that most place charge about $40 for an hour of video.
