Rest, Ice on the jaw, anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen and acetaminophen), DO NOT USE STRAWS. Do not self medicate yourself without first talking to the dentist. Usually the dentist will give you Tylenol 3 to help with the pain. Gargle with warm water and salt, spit out and do this several times a day. Salt is good for toughening gums and also to help healing. If this problem doesn't seem to improve in the next couple of days please see your dentist.

Ice is still the best remedy for swelling. Wrap an ice pack in a soft cloth. Apply the pack for 10-15 minutes (or less, depending on how it feels); you can lift it up if it feels too cold and put it back down in a minute or so. After the 10-15 minute "on", remove the ice completely for 10-15 minutes... then you can reapply it for another 10-15 minutes. This "on - off" cycle allows the ice to reduce the swelling, without harming the skin or tissue.

Ice and if the dentist agrees, anti-inflammatories.

Also, it is helpful to put the ice in a bag, so the edges of the ice cube will not irritate the swollen area.

Keep your head elevated as much as possible and apply ice packs fifteen minutes on, then fifteen off.

Are your sinuses affected by wisdom teeth removal?

Your sinuses will only be affected if something were to go wrong during the extraction. When top wisdom teeth are extracted, there is a very slim chance of a tool puncturing your sinuses. The swelling after the procedure does not (should not) affect breathing either.

Does every person have swollen cheeks after wisdom tooth removal?

Yes, but to different extents. It depends on the the patient and the condition of his or her teeth, as well as their body's internal healing systems. Level of swelling is also determined by the skill of the operating surgeon. Swelling is caused by a pooling of fluid in specific areas of the body. In the case of wisdom teeth removal, the body is producing a natural response to what it perceives as trauma. By saturating the area with fluids, the body is trying to allow the affected area to heal in a protected, nutrient-rich environment. So, it is plausible that a skilled surgeon operating on a patient with an easy case of impacted wisdom teeth would produce little swelling. On the other hand, an unskilled surgeon operating on someone with highly impacted teeth would probably cause a lot of swelling.

What is the surgery like for removal of extra impacted wisdom teeth behind wisdom teeth that are already present?

It is very unusual to have two sets of wisdom teeth - are you sure? Removal is only required if problems occur and the teeth do not erupt normally. After surgery, there is commonly pain, swelling, bruising and rarely tingling or numbness in lip, chin, tongue which us usually transient. The difficulty of the surgery depends on the position of the teeth, best assessed in the clinic and by radiography (X-Ray). Most importantly, don't worry. Dr Nicholas Manning BDS Glasg MFDS (RCSEng) If you have an extra set of wisdom teeth, there are good chances that your mouth has more room for the dentist of the surgeon to work and remove them.
