Your system had a low & high pressure side (2 ports) you will find on 2 different hoses. Get a can of R12 with a guage & plug it in. If it is low, discharge can. Low side should be around 125# & has blue cap. High is red. They work like the valves in a tire. If you have no pressure, you have a leak somewhere-most likely an o ring.
I think the days of R12 are pretty much history, most auto A/C today require 134 A
