You would have to find a tube or something to release the handle and ratchet.
i just had to do this on the road, i used an ice scraper handle and a flash light. if you look under the dash behind the release handle you can see the lever to pry on to release the brake, caution the peddle may snap up and hit you.
On the newer vehicles, you push the parking brake down to release the parking brake. Older vehicles have a release handle on the lower left side of the dashboard.
If it doesn't have a release handle, you step down on the parking brake pedal one more time to release it.
On most cars with a foot pedal parking brake, there is a handle usually just above it that you pull to release the brake.
parking brake is held on by a ratchet inside the car, ,so if the cable is broken your brakes will not be locked onif they are, you have more than a broken cable problem.--------------I beg to differ. It may be that it's only the release cable that is broken. This was the case in my older (79) Chevy Malibu. It wasn't the actual brake cable that broke. So my parking brake was stuck on. Ok then i did find a little lever part that i could pull back on beneath the dash, it was sort of connected to the parking brake pedal base. Look underneath the dash by the ebrake pedal, see if you can trace the route from the release handle to where its little pull cable might attach. That is the point where you would want to pull back to release the pedal. it worked for me, but of course it's a different type of Chevy. Just be careful as those moving parts will then release and you want to keep your fingers safe.--purry1
I have had the same problem. I simply removed the broken plastic handle which left the cable with a metal hook end exposed which you can pull directly toward the rear of the car. It is a little uncomfortable and works better with gloves. I am looking for a replacement online, but haven't found one yet
It releases automatically when you shift out of park. If you have to do it manually under the parking brake is a silver handle that releases it.
Best ways are if you can see exposed cable underneath the truck, go underneath and yank down on the cable as hard as you can. If the parking brake isn't needed or you just need to free the brake to move the truck and can go get it repaired if necessary, cut the cable back by the brake and the brake will release. Shouldnt cost more that 150 bucks to get a new e-brake installed.
you have to replace the handle, there about 15 dollars. Also, you can use a pair of pliers to hold on to the brake wire, if enough is sticking out from the release position.
Remove the cover of the parking break handle. On the back (opposite the button you push to release) there is a little nut to tighten and loosen.
The release handle is right above the parking brake pedal underneath the dashboard on left side.
