Look for the tensioner pulley. There are threads on the tensioner arm that you have to put a bolt into. Turn the bolt and the tensioner will loosen. The belt will slide off. Put the new one on and remove the bolt in the tensioner.

2:

I personally use a pair of vise grip and pry the tensionner arm

Where are the tension releases to change alternator belts on a 89 Jetta?

Look at the front of the bracket underneath of you alternator, you will see a bolt that connects to the back of the pulley below the alternator itself. That will dial in/out your alternator and then you can tighten down the nut that holds the pulley in place. WHile it is true the tensioner is located on the top of the alternator with a dial type ratchet system, I have not had an 89-90 Jetta where this works. Usually you have to tension it with a bar of some sort prying against another pce of the engine.

Hi, if you are still looking. gas engine Jetta: remove negative battery cable. remove positive cable on alternator. remove blue wire on alternator. Loosen and remove mounting bracket (on top of alternator) be careful not to lose any of this bolt (very hard to find replacements). Remove alternator belt. REmove lower mounting bolt. Remove from engine. Reverse to install. All done. diesel Jetta: mounting bracket is on the bottom and engine mount is on the top. that's the only difference. same procedure. have fun!

How do you fix the 16V power source in a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6?

Your car should be charging at around 14 volts. I would suspect the voltage regulator is at fault if it is charging too high. You can replace the alternator. If you can find an aftermarket voltage regulator you can replace just that. It is on the back of the alternator.

How do you replace the alternator on a 1992 VW Jetta?

Had to do one myself. Not that bad. Disconnect negative battery cable, and then start removing bolts off the alternator. The 2 hardest things are going to be the big adjustor nut on the left, it'll take off the tension on the belt. after that you have one big long bolt that's the whole length of the alternator. It'll come out halfway easy. To remove the alternator, wobble it out. Might stick a little bit, but will come out. I'm by no means a mechanic, but it's not as bad as some. When you put the new one in, just line up the holes and good to go. Just try to have a long breaker bar (i used a socket extension) and an extra pair of hands when you go to put the tension back on the belt. You'll need it. And be careful with the teeth on the adjustor nut. Good luck!!!! Love my jetta!!!!
