Remove the gas cap. If you do not hear the pressure release, then press the shrader valve located on the fuel rail.
30 psi from the doorjamb decal on my 1995 Cougar.
How do i find the instructions for changing out the fan switch assembly in a 2001 Mercury Cougar?
fuel filter is on the right frame rail near the fuel tank.if vehicle is fuel injected you should relieve the fuel system pressure before removing filter.this can be done by unpluging the enertia switch in trunk then run engine till it stops.also loosen gas tank cap this will relieve some pressure as well.once filter is changed reconnect enertia switch and push reset button.start car check for leaks.you might want to wear some eye protection for this job theres always some pressure left in lines not to mention the dirt that may have accumulated on rail and filter.regards lee

The normal tire pressure for a 1997 Cougar should be 32 psi. The tire side wall has the exact rating for the psi stamped into it from the tire factory.
the average car is 32 PSI
You can find the 1997 Mercury Cougar low pressure port on top of the air conditioner compressor. The low pressure port will have a blue top.
i dont know if you have changed this alternator or not but if you have and the new one quit call me i know the problem mine went out 5 times before i figured it out. 252-814-9267
It's on the fuel rail on the engine
the ignition control module could be the problem
Ford uses special spring-loaded disconnects on the fuel lines from the tank to the engine, because the fuel pump is in the tank, and the lines are pressurized to a fair amount of pressure. There are special disconnect tools available from any auto parts store, but before you go yanking those lines loose, you need to relieve any trapped pressure from the lines. If you don't already know how to properly and safely do this, I strongly recommend you take the car to a professional.
I have a 1994 Mercury Cougar that runs good but burns alot of fuel and after the engine starts the and gets some heat, oil pressure gauge indicates low when there is nothing wrong. I have the same problem with a 1991 Mercury Cougar 3.8, doesn't burn fuel that much but a mechanician told me that it might be a miscontact on the gauge indicator, some dirt in oil pan blocking oil pump or the oil pump is going off. First thing to do is changing oil and filter replacing it by syntec oil in it so it will stay in engine more time when heating. If after that nothing changed check oil pressure at a local garage.
