You will either have to secure the engine from the top, remove the subframe and take the transmission out the bottom, or pull the engine first and then take the transmission out the top. I always remove the subframe and remove the transmission from below. Either way it is a big job. On the 3 liter I have been tempted to remove components from front of the engine move it towards passenger side, remove valve body cover off transmission and see if there is enough room to sneak it past the sub frame. I have never tried this, or heard of it being done, but maybe someone out there has tried this. Would be really interested if that has worked.
I agree with the answer above--it's best to remove the transmission from below, by dropping the subframe, so you don't have to remove the engine first. You'll first need to use a support beam to keep the engine supported while and after removing the transmission.
